What Are The Different Types of Air Cylinders?

An Air or pneumatic cylinder is a device which utilizes the power generated from compacted gases and fabricates it into linear motion. Also known as an air cylinder, the characteristics of these cylinders differ on the basis of their applications and depending upon their applications, their shape, size and material of which they are made of, differ.

With the potential to be used in different fields, these pneumatic cylinders can be used for the opening of valves and hoisting hefty objects while also being used in the suspension and brakes of vehicles. With such diversity in its applications, these cylinders are classified into different types. To get an idea, here are a few of the many types of these cylinders:

Single-acting cylinders

Also referred to as SAC, these cylinders make use of pressure which actually forms in air, which is compact in nature. Most of the single-acting cylinders have extensions which are very restricted, primarily because the spring of these cylinders take much of the space.

Double-acting cylinders

Commonly known as the DAC, the double-acting cylinders utilize the air pressure so that it can pull in strokes and hence, be mobile in range. Composed of two components, these cylinders let the surrounding air in from both the components. One is responsible for the out-stroke and the other is responsible for in-stroke.

Telescoping cylinders

Also referred to as the telescopic cylinders, these cylinders are available in two modes namely, single-acting mode and double-acting mode. Equipped with such designs, they can have much longer strokes but shorter retracted length. One of the most common applications of these cylinders is being used in trailers.

Pneumatic Press & Arbor Press: An Overview

When we contemplate how the items which we use in our daily lives are manufactured, we envisage heavy machines pressing and people operating them in dark and dingy places. We take such machines for granted but take them away, life will come to a halt as the items which we use in our daily lives will disappear.

Such machines have a wide number of applications ranging from heavy jobs to small-hand related jobs. However, little do we know what are these machines, how do they work and what benefits they dispense. To get you familiarized with such concepts, here is an overview of the two well-known machines in the industrial sector:

Pneumatic Press

Such presses are heavy machines which apply a hefty force on specific objects. Powered with compressed air, these presses are mostly used in manufacturing processes. These presses dispense a number of benefits to its users such as being cost-effective and durable. Apart from the economic benefits, these presses are known to reduce the hazards of the workplace and also reduce the workload on employees, as much of the work is done by this press.

This press is often associated with small-hand related operations such as riveting and bearing removal. Such presses are considered to be much better for the assembling of bearings and shafts. Also a number of pin-pressing activities are best performed on these presses. Apart from all such benefits, the one benefit which makes this press prominent is that it is quicker when compared to its alternatives.

Apart from these presses, there are also a number of other presses available in the market such as hydraulic press, fly press and power press.

How do Pneumatic Solenoid Valve Works?

In a pneumatic system, air valves are used to control the flow of air. A solenoid valve is used both in a hydraulic and pneumatic system. It is a method to convert electrical signals into Pneumatic functions. Solenoid valves are controlled by a solenoid and typically used to manage the flow of air and water as a switch. Pneumatics controls the opening and closing action of a solenoid.
What is a solenoid?
A solenoid refers to a coil used to create magnetic fields when wrapped around a magnetic core or object.
Kinds of Pneumatic solenoid valve
Valves can be classified as externally or internally piloted. Externally piloted valves use an external source of air pressure. Internally piloted valves use an internal source of air pressure. They can also be divided based on the number of connections or paths for flow they contained.
The most basic type of valve is a two way, two-position poppet valve, which helps in opening and closing of flow when their coil is energized. Another example is three ways, two-position poppet valve. This type of valves allows diverting of fluids from one channel to another. Two 3/2 valves in parallel can be used to control and cylinder bi-directionally. These types of valve are used in hydraulics and pneumatics.
Which types of pneumatic control valves are used?
An internally driven pilot with four-way connections is usually used in Pneumatic operations.

Pneumatic Press v/s Hydraulic Press

Presses are used in industries for a variety of uses like squeezing, forming and pressing. There is various type of presses, the most famous two being Hydraulic press and Pneumatic press. They are used to perform some similar things. However, there are some differences between them, which need to be kept in mind before choosing any one of them.
Pneumatic Press
The manipulation of pressurized air controls this press. The air is forced into a tube, which after filling applies pressure on the press to move it downwards. Once the stroke of the press gets completed, the air is excavated through valves. Finally, mechanical spring’s causes the pump to move upwards.
Hydraulic Press
Hydraulic presses are chambers filled with liquid, which is generally oil. A piston presses into the chamber, causing the oil to shift position. Since, the chamber is sealed the oil exerts pressure on large piston or baseplate, causing it to move downwards.
Which to choose Hydraulic or Pneumatic?
The primary difference between the two is speed. A pneumatic press is much faster than the hydraulic press, which means it can perform many jobs faster. However, this advantage is not suited, where slow speed is required.
Level of maintenance required is also different. Hydraulic presses require more care and maintenance. They have many components which need to be maintained regularly. This makes them more costly. On the contrary, Pneumatic presses need less time and maintenance.
